Meta decided to stop its project for advanced mixed reality glasses, which was aimed at competing with Apple Vision Pro glasses, according to a report by The Information.
Meta asked employees at Reality Labs, a U.S. company that makes virtual reality glasses, to stop working on the device after a product review meeting attended by CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
The report, the glasses, known as La Jolla, began development in November last year and was scheduled to be launched in 2027.
The mixed reality glasses were also expected to include high-performance micro OLED screens, similar to those used by Apple in its Vision Pro headsets.
The report pointed out that the target of pricing the glasses below $ 1,000 was a major point of contention due to the high cost of OLED display technology, taking into account that the Apple Vision Pro glasses are sold at $ 3,500, which contributed to the slowdown in its sales since its launch in the market. The Meta Quest Pro retails for $1,500.
However, the company is changing its strategy a bit, trying to introduce XR's software, Horizon OS, for use by other companies.
Meta is also looking for opportunities for cooperation, including discussions with Indian tech giant Jio, although previous agreements, such as the one it struck with LG, have not been successful.
The company may revive this project in the future once this product gains greater momentum from consumers.
